Rotary Club of Marikina Heights
Scrabble Tournament
It was Rotary Year 2005-2006 during the time of DG Jaime Dee when The Rotary Club of Marikina Heights has toyed with the idea of a service project that is something different. A project not yet done by any Rotary club in the district or perhaps in the entire country, something that would increase the level of enthusiasm among club members and their spouses in community service.
And so, the First Scrabble Tournament in Marikina was born -- a brainchild of CP Boy Marigza. It was actually conceived a year earlier during the time of DG Fabie Enriques but was implemented a year later under the leadership of club president Tadashi Tomizawa. The project was classified under the Literacy and Education and New Generations programs of Rotary and was headed by Committee Chairwoman Aster May Astudillo.
The First Marikina Scrabble Tournament organized by the Rotary Club of Marikina Heights was held on October 22, 2006 at the Marikina City Hall Quadranlge lobby with about 100 high school and elementary students representing 18 private and public schools in Marikina City. In support of the Marikina City’s program to improve English proficiency among students in Marikina, city mayor Marides Carlos Fernando handed her stamp of approval for the holding of the tournament. The Rotary Club of Marikina Heights wasted no time to link with the Division of city schools of Marikina City – Department of Education through Dr. Mayari, Dr. Masigan and Dr. Isabelita Sta. Ana, English Supervisor.
