Batang Ina: A Teenage Pregnancy Awareness Webinar

August 28, 2021

The Philippines has recorded a total of 180,916 births among adolescents aged 10-19 in 2019, this is equivalent to 495 births per day, and is one of the highest adolescent birth rates among ASEAN nations. At the end of 2020, Commission on Population and Development reported that 70,755 families were led by minors. At this rate of teenage pregnancies, it is already a "national social emergency". With this, the Rotary Club of Marikina Heights together with other clubs in the Cluster 4A and 4B of RI District 3800 made an effort to conduct a webinar to help the youth of the community, which Interact and Rotaract clubs belong to, and parents alike, know the effects of this "pandemic" teenage pregnancy. Almost 130 participants joined the webinar.

Mother and Child Wellness

December 7, 2019 and February 7, 2020

Two training activities were conducted, the first at the first Saturday of December 2019 and the second at the first Saturday of February 2020. Each activity, conducted in the afternoon, lasted for approximately 4 hours. The participants were familiarized with 3 components (personal hygiene, prenatal care and birthing) of maternal and child care at the first activity and three components (post-natal care of mother and child, family planning, housekeeping and livelihood) at the second activity. Personnel of the Marikina City Health Office and the Marikina Maternity Clinic and Lying-In, as well as the nursing students of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Marikina provided the interactive lectures. Every participant received a hygiene kit, milk for lactating mothers and basic baby supplies at each of the two sessions. Generous snacks of nutritious soup and fresh drinks were served at each activity

Seventy-Five (75), mostly young pregnant women and young women from low-income families in the community of Barangay Fortune learned about personal care, what to avoid during the time of pregnancy and child birth, how to take care of their new-born babies and keep them healthy. They learned how to spend their limited income in the most efficient way for the welfare of the family. They learned how to augment their family income with doable livelihood activities. As part of this project the Club will be mobilizing a team of initially about 10 young women who attended the two seminars to become role models in the community. The women interviewed after the sessions mentioned what they learned much from each of the sessions. Pre-natal care and care of newborn babies and infants were the outstanding topics from which they learned most, they said.

The project was done in close coordination with the authorities and health volunteers of Barangay Fortune, and personnel from the Marikina City Health Office. Personnel from the Marikina Maternity Clinic and Lying-in of Barangay Parang and nursing students from Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Marikina provided additional technical and material support.
